Trip Theme: Beer
Lagers, Libations, and the Pursuit of Hoppiness

Beer
Beer was more than a beverage—it helped sustain life.
For centuries, when drinking water was often unsafe, beer became the everyday drink across much of Europe. It was nourishing, mildly alcoholic, and—thanks to the brewing process—free of contaminants that made water dangerous.
In Bavaria especially, beer became essential. Even today, it’s officially classified as a Nahrungsmittel—a foodstuff, not merely a drink. This deep-rooted beer culture carries centuries of tradition, pride, and social connection. Bavarian beer is still crafted from just a few pure, fresh ingredients, reflecting a legacy of care, simplicity, and dedication.
Beer wasn’t just sustenance; it was also a reason to gather, celebrate, and unwind after a day’s labor. Long before it became a global commodity, beer was the backbone of local life—particularly here, where it continues to be poured with meaning.

Beer may be rooted in tradition, but no two places in Bavaria pour it quite the same way.
For centuries, nearly every town had its own brewery—sometimes several—each producing beer shaped by local tastes, customs, and available ingredients. In Bamberg, brewers still make smoky Rauchbier using techniques passed down through generations, while in Munich, Starkbier season marks a centuries-old tradition of strong, malty brews first crafted by monks. Across the region, beer forms the foundation of local festivals, community gatherings, and seasonal rituals.
Our beer themed tours invite travelers to explore this vibrant landscape, where variety isn’t just tolerated—it’s celebrated. The joy is in the divergence, and in discovering that beer, like Bavaria itself, is full of character. All of our beer tours are scheduled around a major festival.
